In a grim reminder of IT executive Jigeesha Ghosh’s abduction and murder, a 31-year-old teacher was allegedly dragged into a car near her home in Dwarka
, southwest Delhi, robbed inside the moving vehicle and dumped half an hour later at an isolated spot in the area.
The victim, Sanjana Bharti (name changed on request), had a narrow escape as her assailants — four men and a woman — planned to kill her but later allowed her to go after taking away her gold jewellery and mobile phone.
The incident took place late in the afternoon when Sanjana was returning from her school. ‘‘It was around 3.10am. I had got down from a cab and was walking towards my house in Sector 14 when I noticed a white Maruti van standing near the bus stop opposite my apartment building,’’
‘‘As I walked past the car, a woman sitting inside with four men asked for an address in Sector 14 and handed me a piece of paper. As I was looking at the address, the men on the rear seat pulled me inside the car. The car had blue curtains and I couldn’t note down the number,’’ Sanjana said.
The assailants then took a U-turn and went towards the Sector 16 B police post from where they took another turn and started moving in isolated areas of Dwarka
. ‘‘They were armed with knives and other weapons. The three on the rear seat threatened me that they would kill me if I raised an alarm. The woman, who would have been around 21-22, took away my money, mobile phone and a gold chain from my purse,’’ said Sanjana.
‘‘They pointed weapons at me and asked me to hand them over my rings — I was wearing two gold ear-rings and a diamond ring. When I showed reluctance, they forcefully took out my gold ear-rings as well as two gold bangles,’’ added Sanjana. They kept roaming in Dwarka
for nearly half-anhour and one of them reportedly asked his colleague to kill Sanjana. But the woman accomplice interrupted, asking them to drop her at an isolated place. Police suspect that the woman accused could be a man in disguise — a ploy to
trap unsuspecting women.
They later dropped Sanjana near an isolated park in Sector 17 and told her not to turn back. Sanjana had to walk down to her house as she was left with no money. Her husband is a teacher in a south Delhi school. They later informed the police after which a case was registered.
DCP (southwest) K Jegadesan said, ‘‘We have registered a case and are investigating the matter. So far no one has been arrested.’’
