Exam failure drives teen to suicide

Unable to bear the disappointment of not clearing her competitive exams and the fear of letting her father down allegedly led 18-year-old Ankita to commit suicide at her home in Patel Garden area of Kakrola in Dwarka on Wednesday night. Binny, as Ankita was fondly called by her parents, was reportedly a bright student.

Her father Dr Shailesh Kumar, a wellknown doctor, runs his own nursing home in Dwarka. “She was such a hard working and beautiful girl. She was expecting to do well in her CBSE XII exams and the next logical step would have been to appear for the AIPMT,” said one of her relatives. On Wednesday afternoon, the AIPMT results were declared and unfortunately, Ankita didn’t make it. “She didn’t tell her parents about it. Neither her parents nor her 12-year-old brother had any inkling about the results. The family went out for dinner around 9.30 pm, but Ankita stayed back saying she didn’t feel like going out. When they returned around 10.30 pm, they found her hanging from the ceiling fan in her room,” said an official from Dwarka police station.

Binny left behind a suicide note apologising to her parents for not being able to clear the entrance exam and losing her confidence completely. She said in the note that due to this failure, “she was completely broken” and had lost the confidence to even reappear for the entrance. Her body was taken to DDU Hospital for postmortem and will be handed to the family on Friday.
